Tropical Water Lilies

Tropical water lilies are the most vibrantly colored and showy of all the flowering water plants. They flourish in warm summer climates with profuse blossoms in hot weather. Their blossoms open 5 inches above the water surface and are likely to produce more than one flower at a time. Tropical lily blossoms are available in shades of autumnal yellow to orange, blue, purple, red, pink, and white. The pink blossoms tend to be the most profuse. If properly cared for, this lily will bloom from June to November. The foliage is quite unique; it can be specked with color on top of the leaves and/or have burgundy undersides. The tropical varieties make excellent cut flowers as well. They bloom longer, grow faster and larger in size than hardy lilies.

Tropical water lilies are available in both day and night blooming varieties. The day-blooming lilies generally require six hours of full sun and will blossom repeatedly for 3-5 days. The sweet-scented blossoms can remain open for as long as ten hours.

Night blooming varieties tend to require 4-5 hours of full sun and have a heavy perfume. The night bloomers open very slowly and make for a splendid presentation. Often referred to as the 'commuter lily', the blossoms of the night blooming varieties open in late afternoon and do not close until the next morning. This allows the 9-5 work force to enjoy their tropical blossoms in the evening hours.

Plant topical varieties in the ponds and pools in late spring to early summer, when evening water temperatures are consistently warm. Place fertilizer tablets directly into the soil of the container at least once per month to ensure the most prolific and vibrant blossoms possible. Many gardeners use the tropical lily varieties as annuals, because they require warm, sunny weather year round. However, the tropical varieties should thrive through winter if placed in a warm greenhouse environment that receives full sun.
