Water Lotus
Lotus plants are well known for their large blossoms, giant leaves, and the interesting seedpod that grows from the center of the blossom. A relative of the lilies, lotuses seem to share qualities of both the tropical and hardy varieties. Like the tropical lilies, the lotus is fragrant and very showy. Its blossoms can reach as high as five feet about the water, and in some cases the foliage sits above the water as well. Like the hardy water lily, the lotus is hardy and can thrive through the winter months if kept in a pond or pool at least 18 inches deep. It will continue to bloom year after year. Lotus also lend themselves well to small container plantings on decks and patios. A whiskey barrel, or other decorative container, makes a great temporary water garden for small spaces.
The lotus requires at least six hours of direct sunlight. They tend to require a medium to large size pond, as they are vigorous growers and prolific bloomers. The lotus blossoms come in pinks, whites, and yellows. The flowers open to 6 to 12 inches wide. The care and fertilization of the lotus is the same as the hardy water lily. Use three tablets of fertilizer per pot once a month during June and July. If well cared for, the lotus will bloom prolifically from June through July.
